Ten Vintage Fashion Rules My Mom was Right About; From Ruby Lane

I blog for Ruby Lane on a variety of topics involving vintage fashion, antiques, and dolls. Here is a recent piece I did on fashion rules:  https://www.rubylane.com/blog/fashion/10-vintage-fashion-rules-my-mom-was-right-about/#.WRxwDFo3ZAM.blogger.

To paraphrase George Orwell,  break any of these rules before you do something horrendously barbarous!

This weekend is tax free weekend in many states, including Iowa and Illinois.  Macy's is having another one day sale, and Dillard's and other chains put all kinds of things on clearance at an additional discount.   Illinois has a high sales tax, state and local, for that matter.  This is a great time for back to school bargains, summer stock ups for next year, and fall fashion previews.  Shop online at Younkers.com and other stores for even better values.

Thrift stores and consignment shops don't always charge tax, but they may have extra special sales and bargains, so don't leave them out of your search.

Other deals online, Zulily has Gymboree starting at $6.99.   Navy is in, and Talbot's is offering deals on Navy and all sort of other items.

Rubylane.com also has great deals on peridot jewelry, in honor of August's birthstone.   Check out Charming Charlie, Target, Walmart, and other chain stores for deals on costume jewelry.  They will be marking down for next season.  Everything at Charming Charlie is color coded, and you will find great fall colors and neutrals with the sales items that will save you a lot of money.

My tip for this fall is black jewelry.  It goes with everything and is classic.  Black glass or crystal beads, black pearls, real or faux, lava beads from Mexico, some animal shaped, plastic, Lucite, jett, if you can find it, even souvenir piece of polished coal look great on anything!  Black gutta percha, a kind of rubber, is made into cameos and all kinds of brooches.  Bakelite jewelry also appears in black and complementary colors.

Thrift shops and yard sales yield great jewelry finds.  Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and Lee Wards also sell a lot of jewelry that you can finish your self, or even wear ready made.
